It’s bound to happen sooner or later: silicone caulk all over your clothes.
The very properties that make silicone caulk so useful in the kitchen, bathroom and outside the house also make it kind of a pain to remove silicone caulk from clothing
Before you start trying to wipe all the silicone caulk out of your favorite shirt, take a deep breath and calm down.
We can get through this together.
All that you need to do to get out that pesky caulk is to remember a few simple letters: FSDW.
What that stand for? Well, just keep reading the article, wiseguy, and we’ll show you.
Here’s how to remove silicone caulk from clothes in just a few simple steps:
1) Freeze It!
Silicone caulk stiffens when exposed to colder temperatures. This a scientific fact. Take advantage of this property of caulk and make the most of it.
Take off the article of clothing with the caulk, try not to spread the caulk around more while undressing. Fold it so that the silicone caulk is on the top of the material.
Open the freezer door and stick the silicone laced piece of clothes inside. Don’t let the caulk touch the walls or any other part of the freezer.
2) Scrape It!
Use a putty knife to remove the silicone caulk from your clothes by scraping away, once the caulk is frozen. If you’re lucky, the caulk should come away in a big chunk or several pieces. Continue scraping until all the big pieces are gone.
3) Degrease It!
Take your favorite degreaser, such as WD-40, and apply a small bit of it to your clothes. Test for colorfastness. Once you’re satisfied this chemical won’t eat your shirt, use the degreaser to remove any silicone caulk residue.
4) Wash It!
Finish by washing your clothes in the washing machine. Wash your newly de-siliconed clothes separately, just in case some of the degreaser is still in the fabric.
